Adopting A Pet

Step 1:  Adoption Application

If you would like to adopt an animal from the Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), you must first complete an adoption application.  Copies of the application form are available by downloading the link below or by contacting the Society at portageanimalwelfaresociety@hotmail.com

Step 2:  Background Check

Once you have completed the adoption application, we will proceed with a background

check.  The background check consists of:  (1) an interview with you, during which you

will be asked to provide proof of identity; and (2) veterinary reference checks, particularly if you have other animals at home.

Step 3:  Adoption Contract and Fee

Upon successful completion of the background check, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract and pay the specified adoption fee.  The adoption fee covers the cost of veterinary care, de-worming, heartworm-testing (seasonal) and vaccines your pet received while in the care of the Society.  All animals adopted from PAWS are spayed or neutered and tattooed.

Fees are as follows (subject to change without notice):

Puppies under 4 months of age - $200.00

Puppies over 4 months/Adult dogs - $175.00

Kittens/Adult cats - $95.00

Please note:

  • All adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis

  • Animals are available for adoption only to persons approved by the Portage Animal Welfare Society.  Approval is determined based on the successful completion of the adoption process as described above.

  • For persons living in rental property, the permission of the landlord is required before the adoption can be approved.

  • The adoption will not be approved if the animal is being adopted as a gift for another person.

  • Animals are to be kept as household pets only.

  • Cats must be adopted as indoor pets only.
