Foster Care

The long term goal of the Portage Animal Welfare Society is to build a "No-Kill" Animal Adoption Center in the City of Portage la Prairie, MB.  Until this project is complete, the Society is actively looking for loving foster care homes for our adoptable pets.

Our foster care program benefits both the fostered animal and the foster care family.  Fostering allows our animals to socialize with people and, usually, other animals, in a home setting.  The foster care family gets to enjoy the love of the fostered animal, and the gratification of knowing that they're making a difference.

We supply our foster care homes with:

  • kennel (dogs)

  • stainless steel bowls

  • collar

  • leash

  • tie-out (if applicable)

  • blanket

  • toys

  • litter box and litter

  • food

There are no expenses for the foster care family.

Interesting in becoming a foster care parent?

You'll need to know the following:

What to expect?

You can expect that your fostered pet will not be “perfect”.  Many of the animals that are placed in foster care are there for socialization and obedience training, usually due to the fact that they are strays or abandoned.  You will need to have patience and be forgiving.

What you should be aware of:

  • general dog and cat care

  • vet appointments and meetings with potential adopters

  • if you require help or relief, we need as much notice as possible

  • we cannot guarantee an animals' personality or temperament

  • foster homes with current pets must have their vaccines up-to-date and be spayed/neutered to protect the animals against diseases

  • City by-laws state that no homeowner should have more than three animals in their care at one time

  • Awareness of the Manitoba Animal Care Act which states that an animal in care, either fostered or owned must be provided proper food, shelter, care at all times and medical attention, and the provisions of the cruelty to animals section of the Criminal Code of Canada

Portage Animal Welfare Society does not re-home animals who have a history of biting or inflicting pain on either humans or other animals.  These animals cannot be processed through the organization’s re-homing program due to the high risk of recurrence they have.

As such, we will not condone any physical abuse on our fostered animals.  If any of the basic requirements are not being met, Portage Animal Welfare Society reserves the right to remove our fostered animal and revoke the foster parent’s application.

We thank you for helping us improve the lives of the “forgotten” animals in our City.
In our continued effort, we hope to provide every adoptable animal with a new life and it’s through the hearts of volunteers that we can make this happen.
