Cruelty
Animal cruelty is a sad fact
in our world today. Many animals suffer due to human neglect and,
unfortunately, human intent.

The Portage Animal Cruelty
Database was created to log reported and unreported cases of animal cruelty in
the City of Portage la Prairie and surrounding areas. This information
will help us to better understand the extent of cruelty that is inflicted on our
animals today. With help from the general public, we hope to make this
database a reliable source of information on a continual basis.

The Portage Animal Cruelty
Database was created in memory of Rusty. Here's her story:
Caution: The story you
are about to read is quite graphic.
Some
time between 9:30pm, October 22/04 and 9:00am, October 23/04, Rusty, a beloved
15 year old belgian malinois/shepherd was brutally mutilated and tortured in her
own front yard. A post mortem revealed that she sustained a massive blow
to her skull, which the vet believes would have rendered her unconscious.
She was beaten on both sides of her body and sustained broken ribs. She
had been stabbed multiple times around the neck, fore legs and rear. The
most gruesome part was that the attacker sliced open the back of her neck, and
pulled her flesh inside out over her face. One ear was left dangling, the
other was found approximately 10-15 feet away. Rusty was deaf and
partially blind. It was a very dark night and she probably didn't even see
or hear the attacker before it was too late. This case has remained
unsolved.

Unfortunately, Rusty's case
is not unique. This happens far more often than any statistics can report.
Mainly because many people feel nothing can be done, and choose not to report
it. The fact is, more can be done. Information sessions and humane
education are just two areas of the Society that will focus on educating the
general public on how to humanely treat animals.
Here, at PAWS, we
see cases of animal abuse more often than not. One of our more severe
cases involves a dog named Sam. Brought in from the RM, it's difficult to
know the stories that follow these dogs. Sam had scarring on this face and
was emaciated. He suffers from extreme anxiety when left alone by his
foster mom. SOS - Help Save Our Sams.

CRUELTY
ALERT!
At
approx. 8am Saturday, April 04/09, a red Ford Escort (99-00 model) stopped
at the stop sign on Home Street in Sherwood Park trailer park. An
individual was witnessed taking a medium tan dog from the back seat of the
car and beating it out on the street. He then put the dog back
in the back seat and drove off. He was located by the witness at
a Tim Horton's drive-thru and confronted about his actions. The
accused didn't deny his actions but instead stated that the dog had run away
and that it had to learn not to do it again. The RCMP were contacted,
as well as Animal Control and the Provincial Vet. With limited
information to go on, this individual has not been located since and the dog
is still in their possession. The witness also noticed a large pile of
Wpg Sun newspapers in the individuals' car, possibly indicating he delivered
them to commercial establishments. If anyone has any information on
who this individual may be, please contact P.A.W.S. @ 857-7297.
